Stereoscopic 3D Comes Home?


3D TV ConceptWith the release of Avatar, and Dreamworks Studio’s announcement that they will ONLY produce 3D films in 2010, one must wonder when 3D will cross the threshold into mainstream television. Imagine watching a hockey game and ducking as ice shavings fly from the players’ skates, or playing the latest Halo game with Project Natal> on a 3D TV. Sony plans to release a 3D TV in 2010, and many companies are expected to follow. Japan, being at the forefront of technological innovation, already has a prototype by SkyTV. Sky3D TV Demo.

Polarizing 3D glasses, not the red-and-blue cheap cardboard ones, allow the home audience comfortable and stylish viewing. They resemble sunglasses.
Experts estimate that within ten years, 3D television will no longer require glasses at all, which will greatly add to the realism, and satisfy the small percentage of people who get headaches from 3D glasses. Currently, there are 3D TVs that don’t require glasses, like Phillips’ 3D display system.

The only catch? They have one hefty price tag: €18,000.
