iPhone/iPod touch: Once known as song identification app Midomi, SoundHound still identifies unknown songs, but also plays back your library, shows artist information and lyrics, and works in the background. For some, it might be better than the Music app itself.
What sets SoundHound apart from other name-that-song iPhone apps like Shazam lies in its music playback, distinguishing it from its predecessor Midomi. The whole entire iPod library is accessible (minus podcasts), and extra information such as lyrics and artist information to whatever you are currently playing. Like the iPod music player, music playback continues even if you close the app, meaning it has the capability of replacing the iPod function.
Other than that, SoundHound did a fair job of identifying every song we threw at it. The free version of SoundHound comes with a limit of how many songs you can identify: five per month, to be exact. If you want to use this function more, you'll have have to shell out $1 for five more songs, or $5 for unlimited use. SoundHound is a free iPhone app available through iTunes for the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. If you've made it your primary music app, or use another, do tell in the comments.
